International Adoption Costs

  • The estimated cost of an adoption ranges from $18,000 - $27,000. The cost will depend upon the country from which you choose to adopt. This total encompasses the agency program fee, international legal fees, home study costs, dossier processing and preparation and travel expenses.

National Endowment for Financial Education

  • Publishes a comprehensive booklet, "How to Make Adoption an Affordable Option," which can be ordered free of charge by calling 303/741-6333 and asking for item #602-E. This booklet can also be downloaded online -- www.nefe.org

Tax Credits

  • Adoption Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001

  • 1. Up to $10,000 tax credit will now be available for adoption expenses. Phase-out of credit begins at $150,000 of adjusted gross income.
    2. If your employer provides adoption assistance, up to $5,000 is tax exempt.
    3. All adoption fees and expenses which are directly related to the adoption qualify for a deduction.
    4. For clients residing outside Wisconsin, please contact your taxing authority or tax preparer to find out about tax credits in your state.

Employee Adoption Assistance Benefit Programs

  • Many employers help their employees when they adopt by reimbursing adoption expenses with a cash benefit of up to several thousand dollars. These benefits are tax exempt. If your employer does not offer this benefit, call the Adoption and the Workplace Project at the National Adoption Center (800/862-3678) for materials to guide you in requesting this from your employer. www.adopt.org

Subsidies for Military Families

  • The U.S. Armed Forces offers up to $2,000 in financial assistance to active members of the military who are adopting a child.

Donations From Churches and Community Groups

  • Some families have received financial help towards their adoption expenses from their church and other civic organizations in their local area.
